This is a large personal project based on old pictures of my parents in the beginning of their relationship I only recently found, upon my dad's death in February 2017.
This series combines the surreality of the setting, Joshua Tree, California, with the surreality of my parents being in love. It's a fever dream of the past, seeing both of my parents with a unique energy and excitement I've never seen. It's an ode to their youth, as seen in the first large painting where it all starts, and the smaller studies, and the second large painting is what comes after this incredibly formidable trip to the desert that put my parent on the path that lead them to the rest of their lives. The second one is different in that it features two people other than my parents, my mom's mom, and myself, both on the far right.
After my dad's death, I was focusing a lot of creative energy and contemplation on him, but after doing so for a few months, I wanted to make something that focused on my mom.
